Preface

This is the third edition of CSA Standard B355 now titled, Lifts for Persons with Physical Disabilities. It supersedes the previous editions published in 1981 and 1986.

This Standard was prepared by the Technical Committee on Lifts for Persons with Physical Disabilities under the jurisdiction of the Standards Steering Committee on Public Safety, and was formally approved by these Committees.

To assist the reader in identifying revisions made to the 1986 edition of this Standard, changes have been identified by a vertical line in the margin. However, the ultimate responsibility for identifying any revisions to a Standard rests with the reader.

Scope:

1.1
This Standard specifies minimum requirements for the design, construction, installation, operation, inspection, and testing of lifts that are to be specifically used by physically disabled persons travelling between fixed points of a building or structure, with a view to safeguarding against risk of accidents associated with the operation of such equipment.

1.2
Lifts covered in this Standard are as follows:
(a) enclosed vertical platform lifts;
(b) unenclosed vertical platform lifts;
(c) stair chair lifts;
(d) enclosed stair platform lifts; and
(e) unenclosed stair platform lifts.

1.3
This Standard does not apply to the elevating devices
(a) specified by CSA Standard CAN/CSA-B44 such as passenger andfreight elevators and freight platform lifts; and
(b) for the handicapped in private residences, specified by CSA Standard CAN/CSA-B613.

1.4
This Standard does not apply to the location of, access to, and usage of the lifts specified herein. These factors may be regulated by the enforcing authority considering the assumptions.
Note: This Standard was prepared with certain assumptions made concerning the minimizing of risk associated with the access to and operation of the lifts for persons with physical disabilities.
